Anthony D'Amico BFA: Essay

Anthony D'Amico
Graphic Design Emphasis

There are very few things in this world that excite me as much as art and design. As a creative person, art and design, consumes me daily in my speech, my thoughts and my actions. I am consistently dissecting the world around me, looking for inspiration in all of it.

Art has always been part of my life. Since I was a child, I loved to draw and play with anything that could put color down on paper. This continued into my high school years when I found a passion for photography and logo design. In 1997, my high school photography teacher said, “This is where the world is going,” and introduced me to the digital world. I took that advice and started to learn how to manipulate photos in Photoshop. Not only did I do it for photography, now I was able to sketch a logo, scan it into Photohop and manipulate it instead of using an airbrush, art boards and tape. The scanner and Photoshop started to become second nature to me. My love for all things design has continued since.

Inspiration comes to me in many forms, from nature to movies to architecture to furniture to typography and certain kinds of art. The Color Field Painting style of art is a personal favorite with Kenneth Noland, Josef Albers, and Mark Rothco sitting at the top of my list. Mid-Century furniture design is also something I look to for design inspiration. The the art and culture of the World War Two era is compelling to me.  Over the last few years, I have fallen in love with typography and I follow the work of Sean McCabe and Jessica Hische faithfully. As well, I am lucky to be surrounded by friends who artists and designers.  I find a great deal of inspiration with in my own social network and community. As a group of friends and designers, they drive me to hone my craft.

Massimo Vignelli said, “You can’t find something you like, design it. ”  That idea has stuck with me. As a designer, we can get so wrapped up in working on the computer, but you can create better design by using different mediums to solve your design problems. My current field of study is graphic design, and because of what Vignelli said, I find myself using as many different mediums to finish my final pieces, from photography to sculpture to drawing to college to whatever it may be.

I plan to continue my study of design as a way to personally refine my craft, and to become more verse in what I do creatively and professionally.

As an artist, I find starting the hardest part of a project. But once you are in it, you start to live inside of it and take the risks it takes to get the results that you are looking for. That is what I experienced with this project. The parameters were to create a sculpture in the round piece that gives a sense of implied motion, something that looks like you took a picture of it as it was moving. After a couple of days, I was still drawing a blank on what to create.

My son loves robots and while was I thinking about what to do, I noticed a design on his backpack of a robot taking off, that is what gave me the inspiration. At that point, I made many trips to Savers, Goodwill, flea markets and estate sales to find all of the objects that I was looking for. One thing that stretched me with this project, was while looking for pieces, you had to imagine what the rest of the robot would look like based on the pieces I was holding at that time. I knew one requirement for the items that I was looking for, had to pre-date the 70′s to give it a “vintage” feel. The use of old tubes, a radio, an oil can, an audio A/B box, bolts, nuts, epoxy, electrical, and plumbing pieces are what makes up the list of materials used.

The second part was the assembly, easier said than done. This is where most of the trouble shooting came into. To give the robot motion meant, I needed to give it angles and weight it the right way so that it wouldn’t fall over. The biggest piece to that problem was to be able to get the body to stand on one foot. Once I was able to do that, I was able to add the rest of the parts to create the robot.

10 Anthony D'Amico BFA: Gather Digital Record Cover

Number of items: 4 Polaroid images + 1 Final Digital
Last Name: D'Amico
Title: Gather
Medium: Polaroid / Digital (Photoshop)
Size: 5"x5"
Project: Self Directed
Date Completed: Fall of 2013

The Gather E.P. artwork was truly inspired by vast landscapes that conveyed a feeling of task, that there was a large area of land to cover a head of the viewer. With no other figures in the images, I hoped to create a feeling of just going ahead and not waiting for the person next to you to start first.
The final image was created with the combination of four Polaroid images taken along I-15 from Salt Lake City to Anaheim and at the Great Salt Lake. My love for the Polaroid started because my wife wanted to buy one to play with. Well, I am the one that seemed to start to shooting with it way more, learning the subtle nuances that each type of camera gives. I loved using the Polaroid images for their natural distress and color variances in the images. These four images were taken with an SX-70 with The Impossible Project film.
The typography needed to match the feel and I felt very strongly that a serif font would do the trick. Giving it a little bit of a glow, helped convey the sun shinning in your eyes at sunset.
